Beyond Data Collection: Why Organizations Need Evidence, Not Just Information

By Micah Asamba,
Director, Keynea Research & Analytics Ltd

Organisations collect more data today than at any other point in history. Customer feedback, financial records, survey responses, monitoring reports, website analytics, and operational statistics are generated daily. Yet many strategic decisions continue to rely on assumptions, intuition, or incomplete information. The problem is rarely a lack of data. It is the inability to transform that data into reliable evidence.

Evidence-based decision-making begins with asking the right questions. Before conducting a survey or commissioning a study, organisations should clearly define the problem they are trying to solve. Research designed around vague objectives often produces large volumes of information with limited practical value. Well-designed research, by contrast, generates findings that directly inform policy, strategy, and operational improvements.

Data quality deserves equal attention. Even sophisticated statistical analyses cannot compensate for poorly designed questionnaires, biased sampling, or inconsistent data collection procedures. The principle of “garbage in, garbage out” remains as relevant today as ever. Reliable conclusions require reliable data.

Analysis is where data begins to create value. Descriptive statistics can summarise patterns, but deeper analytical techniques explain relationships, identify trends, and uncover the factors driving organisational outcomes. Whether analysing programme performance, market demand, customer satisfaction, or operational efficiency, the analytical approach should always align with the research objectives.

Research should not end with a technical report. Findings become useful only when they are translated into clear recommendations that decision-makers can implement. Effective research bridges the gap between evidence and action by presenting results in language that is accessible to managers, policymakers, donors, and other stakeholders.

Artificial intelligence is changing the research landscape. AI tools can accelerate literature reviews, assist with coding qualitative data, improve document editing, and automate routine analytical tasks. These technologies can increase productivity and reduce the time required for many research activities. They are, however, tools rather than substitutes for professional judgement.

Responsible use of AI requires human oversight. Research design, methodological decisions, interpretation of findings, and ethical considerations remain the responsibility of qualified researchers. AI-generated content should always be reviewed for accuracy, context, and originality. Organisations that rely entirely on automated outputs risk introducing factual errors, unsupported conclusions, and methodological weaknesses into important decisions.

For governments, NGOs, universities, and businesses alike, research should be viewed as an investment rather than an administrative requirement. High-quality evidence reduces uncertainty, improves accountability, strengthens funding proposals, supports policy development, and enables organisations to respond confidently to emerging challenges.

At Keynea Research & Analytics Ltd, we believe that good research goes beyond producing reports. It equips organisations with credible evidence to make informed decisions, allocate resources effectively, and measure real impact. In an environment where information is abundant but trustworthy evidence is increasingly valuable, investing in rigorous research is no longer optional—it is essential.
